Amazon secured a 1,920 MW power purchase agreement with Talen Energy through 2042 from the Susquehanna nuclear plant — the largest single nuclear PPA by a technology company. The deal runs concurrently with Amazon's acquisition of Talen's adjacent data centre campus for $650 million. The Susquehanna plant in Pennsylvania provides 24/7 carbon-free baseload power for Amazon's AI data centre operations. This deal was the template for the wave of hyperscaler nuclear PPAs that followed. Amazon also acquired Talen's adjacent data centre campus for $650 million, one of the largest corporate nuclear agreements in history and the template for the hyperscaler-nuclear co-location model (records give differing dates for the original campus agreement; one dates it to May 2024). The partnership was expanded in June 2025 to 1.9 GW from the Susquehanna plant, building on an original 960 MW agreement; the expanded PPA encountered Federal Energy Regulatory Commission challenges over transmission cost allocation, but both companies confirmed the project remains on track. Susquehanna is a 2.5 GW two-unit boiling water reactor plant in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Amazon needs reliable carbon-free baseload power for AI data centres that renewables cannot provide around the clock.
