Proposed advanced nuclear project in Amherst County, Virginia, using small modular reactors for up to 650 MW, unveiled by Charlotte-based Geenex Power at the county Board of Supervisors' meeting on October 6, 2026 (with an information website and community meetings planned). Geenex describes itself as an early-stage developer of about 15 years; it will permit the site and then partner with a technology partner to design, license and operate the reactors, so no reactor design has been chosen and the output could come from one reactor or several. The site, in the county's District 1 near Appalachian Power's Joshua Falls substation across the James River and served by a 138 kV transmission line, has not been publicly identified and will likely need rezoning. A local permitting application is planned for 2027, approvals from Virginia and the NRC will be needed, and construction would likely begin in the early 2030s; Geenex says the project is in an early evaluation stage with studies under way.
