Blykalla's application represents a historic first for Sweden under the country's new Act on Government Approval of Nuclear Facilities, and is one of four state aid applications submitted for new nuclear in Sweden. In March 2026 Blykalla announced it would proceed with the next planning phase for the Norrsundet plant in Gävle after site assessments confirmed suitable conditions; Blykalla is a KTH Royal Institute of Technology spin-off developing the SEALER (Swedish Advanced Lead Reactor) for industrial and municipal heat and power applications, and RISE signed an MOU with Blykalla to accelerate development for these applications. An earlier record carried a 50 MW capacity for this site.
