Holtec International is restarting the Palisades Nuclear Generating Station in Covert, Michigan — a historic first for a fully decommissioned US nuclear plant. The 800 MW PWR received NRC restart approval in 2025. Holtec is simultaneously constructing two new SMR-300 units (Pioneer-1 and Pioneer-2) at the same site. Primary system passivation completed in April 2026. Grid reconnection is targeted for 2026 making Palisades the first nuclear plant in US history to restart after full decommissioning initiation. The plant had been shut since May 2022.
