Proposed restart of Taiwan's Maanshan plant (Nuclear Power Plant No. 3, Pingtung), whose last active reactor shut down on May 17, 2025. A May 2025 amendment allows licence renewal of up to 20 years, and Taipower applied to restart Maanshan and Kuosheng in March 2026. On September 2, 2026 the Nuclear Safety Commission said it had completed its technical review of the Maanshan application, with approval pending final administrative procedures; Taipower must still complete inspections and submit an implementation report, and the economic affairs minister has said restart could come as soon as 2028. A referendum on scrapping the nuclear-free homeland policy is planned with the November local elections.
