Austria has a constitutional nuclear ban but industrial groups are exploring whether heat-only nuclear applications (district heating) could be pursued under existing law. The LDR-50 and similar heat reactor designs are being evaluated. Several Austrian industrial energy groups attended the EU SMR Stakeholders Forum in January 2026. Any Austrian deployment would require significant legal and political changes and remains highly uncertain.
