Nigeria participated in the IAEA Africa SMR School in Nairobi in May 2025. Nigeria's NAEC is advancing nuclear feasibility studies as the country — Africa's largest economy — faces severe electricity shortages with only about 4,000 MW of reliable generating capacity for 200 million people. Nigeria has engaged with multiple developers and is progressing through IAEA nuclear infrastructure development phases. Western SMR developers see Nigeria as a strategic long-term African market.
