Colombia participated in the IAEA Latin America SMR School in Buenos Aires in August 2025. Colombia is evaluating SMR technology to diversify its heavily hydro-dependent grid which is vulnerable to El Niño droughts. The country has engaged with the IAEA Milestones Approach for newcomer nuclear countries. Colombia's growing energy demand from industry and its geography — with many remote communities — makes SMRs an attractive option.
