KHNP signed an MOU with EGAT in June 2025 for cooperation on small modular reactors. Thailand's draft Power Development Plan 2024-2037 proposes two 300 MWe SMRs to be operational by 2037, one in the north and one in the south. Thailand hosted the IAEA SMR School in Bangkok in July 2025, with participants from ten nations. Thailand currently has no existing nuclear power but has an advanced regulatory framework relative to ASEAN peers, and is pursuing SMR technology in part to reduce reliance on natural gas and coal.
