Appalachian Power is developing a possible small modular reactor site at its Joshua Falls property on the James River, a few miles outside Lynchburg in Campbell County, Virginia. The company first announced the plan in November 2024 (month only; the exact day is not given). No reactor design or vendor has been selected. In November 2026 it asked the Virginia State Corporation Commission to recover site development costs, about $100 million in total against a $125 million cap in a 2024 state law, and is also seeking US Department of Energy funding. If all approvals are received, the reactor would likely not operate until the mid to late 2030s.
