Fermi Energia officially selected the BWRX-300 in 2023 as Estonia's first nuclear power plant technology. The company is focused on site selection and regulatory framework development targeting operations by the mid-2030s. Estonia currently depends entirely on imported electricity from Finland and Latvia with no domestic generation at night. The BWRX-300 selection makes Estonia the first Baltic state to commit to a specific SMR technology and positions it as a regional energy security leader. Today much of Estonia's electricity still comes from oil shale — the BWRX-300 would represent a complete transformation of the Estonian energy system.
