Last Energy secured a lease at the Texas A&M RELLIS Campus and is deploying its PWR-5 pilot reactor under the DOE Reactor Pilot Programme — targeting criticality in 2026. The PWR-5 is a scaled derivative of Last Energy's commercial PWR-20 and uses standard full-length PWR fuel. Last Energy raised over $100 million in an oversubscribed Series C in December 2025 led by the Astera Institute. The company has also secured a Texas site to build 30 microreactors commercially. Last Energy was selected for the DOE Reactor Pilot Program in August 2025 and signed what is described as the first Other Transaction Agreement between the DOE and a reactor developer, with a full core load of fuel procured and a financial Letter of Intent from the US Export-Import Bank. The PWR-5, at about 5 MWe the smallest design in Last Energy's portfolio, serves as the test site validating the PWR-20 commercial design ahead of UK and Poland deployments. The pilot at the Texas A&M-RELLIS applied research campus in Bryan, Texas was announced with Texas A&M on October 14, 2025: the first phase demonstrates safe low-power criticality, and later phases test electricity generation for the campus microgrid and the broader grid; it is fully privately financed and was selected by DOE for fast-tracked licensing under the New Reactor Pilot Program.
