NANO Nuclear Energy acquired the KRONOS MMR (formerly USNC's Micro Modular Reactor) in January 2025 for USD8.5 million. The KRONOS MMR is a 45 MWt, 15 MWe HTGR using TRISO fuel. NANO Nuclear signed an agreement with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to build the first research KRONOS MMR on campus. In April 2026 NANO Nuclear submitted a Construction Permit Application to the NRC for the KRONOS MMR, anchoring its commercial plan in a live NRC review expected to take 18-24 months. CEO James Walker presented on standardisation and rapid rollout at the Reuters SMR Conference in Austin on May 11, 2026. On October 27, 2026 NANO Nuclear signed a non-binding MOU with Hyundai Engineering on project execution for the KRONOS MMR at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, covering planning, procurement readiness and modularisation; possible EPC and construction roles would need separate agreements.
