Newcleo is developing a lead-cooled fast reactor (LFR) prototype of 30 MWe that uses reprocessed nuclear waste as fuel — a design with two major advantages: reducing long-term waste storage needs and lowering the carbon footprint of nuclear power. The company completed the ASNR preparatory review stage in 2025 and has total funding exceeding €645 million since its 2021 founding. Newcleo operates in France, Italy, the UK, Belgium, and Slovakia with approximately 1,000 employees. The LFR design is commercially planned at 200 MWe scale.
