Nuclearelectrica shareholders approved the Final Investment Decision for the RoPower SMR project at Doicești in February 2026 — making Romania the first European country to take an FID on a commercial SMR project. The 462 MWe plant uses six NuScale 77 MWe modules at the former coal plant site approximately 90 km northwest of Bucharest. The project will create 200 permanent jobs, 1,500 construction jobs, and 2,300 manufacturing jobs over its 60-year life. Pre-EPC phase expected to last 15 months. Romania's Minister of Energy called it "the transition from the analysis phase to the implementation phase." Project cost estimated at $6–7 billion by PM Ilie Bolojan.
