In February 2026, Southern Company's Georgia Power received a loan package of up to $26.5 billion from the DOE Energy Dominance Financing (formerly Loan Programs Office) that includes approximately 6 GW of nuclear uprate and life extension work across Georgia Power and Alabama Power nuclear assets. This is the largest single nuclear financing package in US history and reflects the DOE's strategy of using federal loans to unlock maximum nuclear capacity from existing assets. Georgia Power operates the Vogtle 3 and 4 units — the most recently completed conventional nuclear plants in the US.
