Steady Energy is commercialising the LDR-50, a 50 MWt small modular reactor designed exclusively for heat generation for district heating. Unlike most SMRs, it does not generate electricity. STUK completed a preliminary concept assessment in June 2025. The company has signed agreements for 15 reactors in Finland. Steady Energy was selected as a European SMR Alliance CityHeat project, and five European nuclear regulators are conducting a Joint Early Review of the LDR-50. The company plans to start building a pilot plant in Finland in 2026; the 50 MW capacity is thermal (MWt), and the design also targets industrial steam production and desalination.
