Constellation Energy is restarting Three Mile Island Unit 1 — rebranded as the Crane Clean Energy Center — under a 20-year 837 MW PPA with Microsoft signed in September 2024. The $1.6 billion restart project is backed by a $1 billion DOE federal loan awarded in November 2025. The plant was shut down in 2019 for economic reasons after safe operation since 1974. 100% of power goes to Microsoft to match its data centre energy use in Pennsylvania, Chicago, Virginia, and Ohio. Constellation will pursue a licence renewal extending operations to at least 2054. Expected online in 2028.
