Two partially built AP1000 units originally started in 2013 and abandoned in 2017 after approximately 9 billion dollars was spent. Brookfield Asset Management was selected in October 2025 to complete the units. An MOU signed December 2025 sets a June 26 2026 deadline for Brookfield to determine initial feasibility. Approximately 40 percent physically complete at time of cancellation in 2017. Brookfield will pay 2.7 billion dollars cash to Santee Cooper at Final Investment Decision and take 75 percent ownership. FID expected in first half of 2028 with construction completion estimated at 5 to 7 years. Grid interconnection requested for 2031. NRC Combined Construction and Operating Licenses terminated in March 2019 so new applications under Part 50 process will be required.
