Westinghouse is targeting NRC design certification for the AP300 SMR by 2027 — leveraging the existing licensed AP1000 technology to accelerate the review. The AP300 filed its NRC pre-application regulatory engagement in May 2023. The AP300 is the only SMR based on an Nth-of-a-kind operating reactor — all AP1000 components, systems, equipment, passive safety, proven fuel, and I&C are directly inherited. Regulatory approval in the US, Great Britain, and China already covers the AP1000 design basis. Westinghouse targets AP300 construction beginning 2030 with first power delivery 2033. Target cost: $1 billion per unit ($3,400/kW).
