Notes

Westinghouse submitted an application to the NRC to renew and update the design certification for its AP1000 reactor — formally incorporating lessons learned from the construction of Vogtle-3 and Vogtle-4 (the first AP1000s built in the US) into the design control document. The application builds on previous plans at both the NRC and Westinghouse for the future of gigawatt-scale light water reactor deployments. Updating the design certification with Vogtle lessons is expected to significantly reduce the risk of cost overruns and schedule delays on future AP1000 builds — the primary concern raised by DOE in its discussions on financing 10 new AP1000s.
