NPCIL and BARC are jointly developing the Bharat SMR-200 (BSMR-200) — a 200 MWe pressurised heavy water reactor using slightly enriched uranium with passive safety features. NPCIL signed an MOU with Engineers India Limited in 2025 for engineering services on the BSMR conceptual design. India envisions 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 with the BSMR central to plans for replacing retiring coal plants and powering remote industrial sites. The design leverages India's decades of PHWR operating experience.
