Ontario Power Generation received construction approval for a GE Hitachi BWRX-300 at the Darlington site in April 2025. The CAD 7.7 billion project targets operation by 2029, with three additional units planned for CAD 13.2 billion. Backed by Canada Infrastructure Bank. First grid-connected SMR in the G7. The first basemat module for the Darlington New Nuclear Project was installed in May 2026, the first physical nuclear construction milestone for any SMR in the G7, marking the transition from site preparation to nuclear plant construction (nuclear concrete is now being poured). Both the federal government under Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford's provincial government have financially backed the project: the federal government confirmed continued support following the April 2025 election, maintaining its $2 billion commitment, and Ontario Energy Minister Stephen Lecce said communities across the province have been petitioning for a small modular reactor. The BWRX-300 is a scaled-down version of an existing reactor model, GE's tenth-generation BWR design.
