Eden Radioisotopes filed a construction permit application with the NRC for a facility to produce medical radioisotopes — primarily molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) and lutetium-177 (Lu-177), along with iodine-131 (I-131). The United States lacks a reliable domestic source of Mo-99 for diagnostic imaging and has relied on ageing reactors in South Africa, the Netherlands, and Belgium. With a 66-hour half-life, Mo-99 cannot be stockpiled. Eden proposes a small non-power open-pool reactor of 1.8 MWt using low-enriched uranium, optimised for high-yield isotope production, operating 22 hours per day with downtime used to replace targets.
