KHNP is developing the i-SMR (innovative SMR) — a 170 MWe pressurised water reactor that is South Korea's indigenous SMR design targeting first deployment by 2035 per the 11th Basic Plan. The i-SMR uses passive safety systems and a compact design optimised for Korean manufacturing capability. KHNP received standard design approval from NSSC in 2024. The i-SMR targets domestic deployments supplementing the large APR-1400 fleet as well as export markets in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
