Gijang in Busan selected by KHNP to host a new small modular reactor with 700 MW capacity by 2038 under South Korea's 11th Basic Plan. The i-SMR (Innovative Small Modular Reactor) is a 170 MWe integrated pressurised water reactor being developed by KHNP and KAERI. Special Act on SMR Promotion passed in February 2026 with KRW1200 billion investment planned by 2030. The 700 MW figure reflects South Korea's national SMR capacity target by 2038 under the 11th Basic Plan, not the Gijang site's own unit capacity. The Gijang site was selected over Gyeongju, scoring 87.11 points, due to its proximity to the existing Gori nuclear complex infrastructure and an experienced local workforce. The Gijang facility is expected to comprise four SMR units for a combined capacity of approximately 680 MW.
