South Korea's 11th Basic Plan calls for two new large nuclear reactors with combined capacity of 2.8 GWe at Yeongdeok in North Gyeongsang Province, plus 700 MW SMR capacity at Gijang in Busan, all to be built by 2038. KHNP launched a bidding process in January 2026 and the Site Selection Committee evaluated applications from multiple regions before selecting Yeongdeok for large reactors and Gijang for the SMR.
