Moltex Energy is developing the Stable Salt Reactor-Wasteburner (SSR-W) in partnership with New Brunswick Power at the Point Lepreau site. The reactor is designed to use spent nuclear fuel as a primary fuel source, addressing waste concerns directly. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission completed Phase 1 of its pre-licensing vendor design review. Supported by Canadian government funding. The SSR-W is a molten salt fast reactor that consumes transuranic elements from used CANDU fuel, and peer-reviewed research confirms it can consume the vast majority of them, reducing waste volumes, radiotoxicity and heat generation. Moltex announced in March 2025 that it had validated its WATSS fuel recycling process on used CANDU fuel bundles through hot cell experiments at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, demonstrating 90 percent extraction of transuranic material in 24 hours. The 300 MW demonstration unit is planned for Point Lepreau in the early to mid-2030s.
