Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed strong interest in SMR deployment in November 2025 following visits to the United States and Canada, stating that the Darlington BWRX-300 project in Ontario was being closely followed. Hungary is evaluating multiple SMR technologies and has engaged with several developers. Hungary already operates the Paks nuclear plant and is constructing two large VVER-1200 units at Paks II with Rosatom.
