Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed strong interest in SMR deployment in November 2025 following visits to the United States and Canada, stating that the Darlington BWRX-300 project in Ontario was being closely followed. Hungary is evaluating multiple SMR technologies and has engaged with several developers. Hungary already operates the Paks nuclear plant and is constructing two large VVER-1200 units at Paks II with Rosatom. The United States and Hungary signed a civil nuclear cooperation agreement on February 16, 2026 that supports Hungary as a regional SMR hub and encourages the choice of US SMR technology. On October 29, 2026 Reuters reported that the government asked parliament to make the agreement legally binding.
