South Africa's HTMR-100 project secured a ZAR 9 billion ($480 million) financing deal between Koya Capital and Stratek Global — the largest advanced nuclear project financing in sub-Saharan Africa. The HTMR-100 (High Temperature Modular Reactor) is a 35 MWe pebble bed high-temperature gas reactor based on decades of South African pebble bed reactor research from the PBMR programme at Koeberg. The deal represents South Africa's commitment to reviving its nuclear energy programme using domestic technology after the cancellation of the large PBMR commercial project in 2010.
