South Korea plans to build as many as three new nuclear power plants by 2038 and put at least one SMR into operation by 2035. The government's 11th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand (2024-2038) finalised in February 2025 targets nuclear providing 31.8% of electricity by 2030 and 35.6% by 2038. In January 2026, following public surveys showing strong nuclear support, KHNP launched a bidding process for a new nuclear power plant site with selection expected by 2027.
