The SSR-W is a molten salt fast reactor that consumes transuranic elements from used CANDU fuel. Peer-reviewed research confirms the SSR-W can consume the vast majority of transuranic elements, reducing waste volumes, radiotoxicity and heat generation. The 300 MW demonstration unit is planned for Point Lepreau site in New Brunswick by early to mid-2030s. The WATSS recycling process was validated on used CANDU fuel at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, demonstrating 90 percent extraction of transuranic material in 24 hours.
