Duane Arnold Energy Center is a 615 MWe boiling water reactor in Palo, Linn County, Iowa — Iowa's only nuclear facility. The plant was shut down in August 2020 by then-operator NextEra Energy due to adverse economics. In September 2025 NextEra was granted permission to reconnect the plant to the Iowa grid. Google signed a 25-year PPA with NextEra to power the restart in October 2025. FERC filings suggest commercial operation could resume as early as Q1 2028 with NextEra targeting 2029. Google plans up to six data centres near the plant site.
