Flibe Energy is a US molten salt reactor startup developing a liquid fluoride thorium reactor (LFTR) for military and commercial applications. Alongside Oklo, Flibe Energy was selected by the DOE for advanced negotiations to receive surplus US plutonium — announced in May 2026. Flibe's LFTR design can use plutonium as starter fuel, making it a natural candidate for converting surplus weapons-grade plutonium into clean energy. The company has the longest development history of any US thorium reactor startup.
