The Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant State Enterprise is responsible for decommissioning the Ignalina RBMK reactors closed at EU accession in 2009. In September 2025 Ignalina signed an MOU with Newcleo to assess the potential for Newcleo's lead-cooled fast reactor at the Ignalina site — which could reuse existing nuclear infrastructure and process legacy RBMK spent fuel. The MOU covers siting evaluations, SMR energy system integration, reprocessing of used nuclear fuel stocks, and industrial applications for hydrogen and ammonia.
