The Kazakhstan Institute of Nuclear Physics in Almaty is Kazakhstan's premier nuclear research institution and the host of the new Holtec SMR classroom simulator established under the US State Department's FIRST Programme in January 2026. The simulator serves as a regional training hub for Kazakhstan and Central Asia. Kazakhstan accounts for approximately 40% of global uranium mining and is pursuing nuclear power for domestic electricity generation after more than 20 years without atomic electricity.
