Vattenfall is Sweden's state-owned energy company and confirmed in 2025 it has chosen SMRs for its new nuclear programme — positioning Sweden as a major BWRX-300 deployment market. Vattenfall operates the Ringhals and Forsmark nuclear plants and previously decommissioned Barsebäck under a phase-out policy since reversed. GE Vernova Hitachi's April 2026 AFRY MSA directly supports Vattenfall's SMR plans by developing the Swedish licensing application for the BWRX-300. The Swedish government's new nuclear financing mechanisms further enable Vattenfall's SMR programme.
