KGHM Polska Miedź is one of the world's largest copper and silver producers and Poland's leading SMR project developer, partnering with NuScale for a VOYGR-12 plant to power its energy-intensive mining and smelting operations. KGHM submitted a Polish government decision-in-principle application in April 2023 and targets operational status as early as 2029. The company's massive energy consumption makes nuclear power a strategic competitive necessity. KGHM is also a major Polish industrial energy user. It signed a definitive early works agreement with NuScale Power on February 14, 2022 to deploy a VOYGR nuclear power plant of up to 924 MWe in Poland by 2029, described as the first SMR deployment agreement in Central and Eastern Europe; an application for a decision-in-principle was submitted to the Polish government in 2023 and the Ministry of Climate and Environment approved the plan. CEO Marcin Chludzinski said at the signing that KGHM was proud to lead the initiation of a 100% carbon-free energy project.
