BARC is India's premier nuclear research centre developing indigenous reactor designs including the BSMR-200 (200 MWe), SMR-55 (55 MWe), and a 5 MWth HTGR for hydrogen generation. Five indigenous SMRs are targeted for deployment by 2033 under the ₹20,000 crore Nuclear Energy Mission. BARC also develops advanced heavy water reactor technology, thorium fuel cycles, and the Indian Fast Breeder Reactor programme. BARC was removed from the US export control list in January 2025 — enabling greater international technology cooperation following the SHANTI Act.
